Roxy

Roxy was the first G.S.D. 2000 dog to become a blood donor.

Roy and Sonia adopted Roxy when she was five months old and since then she has made a huge difference to their lives.

When Roxy was about five years old they were approached by their vet to see if they would be prepared to let Roxy become a Dog Blood Donor. They were very keen to help and after contacting the charity for advice, were told that we would be proud to be associated with this wonderful helpline for our pets. Roxy’s details were put forward and then it was just a question of waiting for the day for Roxy to be tested to see if she met the criteria.

Roxy’s initial check-up included a full examination and a blood test to ensure that the blood was ok and not infected at the time of taking. Roxy’s owners were with her and kept fully informed through all the various procedures up to and including the donation of the blood. This was taken from her neck and took about 20 minutes; 350+ mls later it was decided that Roxy had done enough and had in fact donated enough blood to keep two dogs going whilst under operation conditions.

After being given plenty to eat and drink, Roxy was allowed home and apart from sporting a few “bald” patches, Roxy has been fine with no side effects or ill health.

If your pet can possibly help others by doing this very vital job, please give them the chance – it will certainly give a very BIG CHANCE to others. For more information contact:
