Amber – From ‘Christmas Leftovers’ to Kathy Moyse Best Rescue 2009 & 2010
Amber was born near Okehampton, Devon in October 2004. She was fifteen weeks old when she was rescued by one of our members and handed into charity care - by that time she had already had three homes, suffering considerable abuse in one of them. The last home she was in had swapped a piece of stair carpet for her. They had also smacked her in the face and knocked one of her teeth out. Why? Simply because she wasn’t house trained.
Amber was re-homed in Gloucestershire in February 2005 and her photograph was used for one of our Christmas cards, aptly named “Christmas Leftovers”.
After her dreadful experiences as a young puppy, her life is now very different. Living in the Gloucestershire countryside, she has acres of open land to run and walk in and her owners' think the world of her. She is more like a best friend than a dog and the saying in their house is "You can look at her but you're not having her!".
Amber is not only a much loved member of the family, she is also invaluable to them in one very special way.
Shortly after they got Amber a member of the family was diagnosed with epilepsy. Since that time, whenever he is having an epileptic fit, Amber goes to fetch other members of the family and takes them to wherever he is; she has never yet failed to alert them and when you consider how young she was when she started to do this it is a truly remarkable instinct.
Amber won the Kathy Moyse Memorial Cup at out annual Companion Dog Show in 2009 and then surprised and delighted us all by winning again in 2010. It took her owner quite a while to recover from the shock, whereas Amber just took it all in her stride!
